How to Stick to Your New Year's Resolution

by televoxweb on Friday, December 1, 2017 3:55 PM

The holidays are here, and we know that many will be getting ready to set resolutions for the New Year. Unfortunately, setting those resolutions is a lot easier than keeping them. Between work, family, friends, and all of life's commitments, it can be surprisingly and frustratingly difficult to follow through on resolutions, especially those related to health. As your dedicated team of physicians and internists in Fulton, NY, we at Northway Medical want to share a few tips for sticking to your New Year's Resolution – whether it's medical weight loss or learning to sew.

Take It One Day At a Time

Often, New Year's Resolutions are hard to keep because they seem so grand and daunting. If your goal is to lose weight through medical weight loss, the idea of losing all those pounds can seem downright unattainable in the abstract. Instead of focusing on the long-term, overarching goal, focus on the micro: what you do today. By breaking your resolution down into only what you have to do on a given day, you make it seem smaller, more attainable, and easier to stick to.

Don't Stress Slip-Ups

The truth is, we all make mistakes – and that's ok. But if you break your resolution on a Monday, that doesn't mean the whole week has gone down the drain! If and when slip-ups happen, accept them, move on, and don't beat yourself up. Ultimately, one mistake isn't going to matter in the scheme of things. What's important is to accept it and keep going.

Get Medical Support

Weight loss can be a downright Herculean task, but it's not something you have to face alone. Talk with your physician or internist about your goals, and work with them to set a comprehensive plan that includes diet, exercise, and medical weight loss treatment. By working with your physician as a team, you increase your chances of following through and effectively losing weight.
