At Northway Medical Associates, our mission is to help each one of our patients lead a happy life and a healthy lifestyle. Our team of doctors and physicians works alongside our highly trained staff to treat every patient on an individual level, designing specialized treatment plans that help each patient move towards total overall health. One of our most common treatments is medical weight loss, an exciting procedure that can help patients reclaim their bodies and start the journey towards a healthier life. For your convenience, we've put together a list of some of the most common questions our patients ask us about medical weight loss along with their answers.

What is obesity?

Obesity is a condition characterized by an excess percentage of body weight (fat), putting a person’s health at risk. Obesity is determined by measuring a patient’s Body Mass Index (BMI).

To determine BMI, your physician will compare your height and weight. Using BMI, you can determine an estimate of your healthy body weight based on how tall you are.

BMI numbers indicate the following:

Less than 18.5% = underweight
18.5% – 24.9% = normal weight
25% – 29.9% = overweight
30% or greater = obesity

What health problems can develop as a result of being obese?

Obese and overweight patients are at a higher risk for many health problems, including:

  • Asthma
  • Sleep apnea
  • Skin infections
  • Joint pain/arthritis
  • Gallstones
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Reproductive problems

In addition to physical health risks, obese and overweight patients are at risk for many emotional and social problems as well. Teasing and discrimination can cause obese patients to have low self-esteem and a negative body image, as well as depression.

Why should I choose medical weight loss?

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight not only improves your appearance, but enhances your overall quality of life.

Medical weight loss is managed by our highly trained, qualified physician, Dr. Rajeev Saini. He has a special interest in bariatric medicine and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, so you are sure to be in safe hands while in his care.

Safe weight reduction also requires a lifestyle change, consisting of proper nutrition and exercise, and after evaluating your physical and medical history, we can implement a detailed weight loss plan that is designed to help you safely and effectively lose and maintain your weight.
